"The director sees Boris Godunov as a story of disillusionment: the story of a society indifferent to its destiny and disengaged from its political issues. Boris plays a loving family man, propelled to the head of state by an all-powerful shadowy figure, Shuysky, who thus ensures control of the puppet he has placed in power. But Boris proves not so manipulable, forcing Shuysky to spread rumors of the return of the heir to the throne. Recalling the spirit of the film Dogville, Barkhatov presents a society that is a victim of its own nonchalance, highlighting the question of our individual and collective commitment."
