Love, cunning and money – these are the ingredients of Rossini’s most popular opera buffa, Il barbiere di Siviglia, and are the cause of hilariously uproarious scenes on stage. The plot: two young people are in love (Count Almaviva and Rosina); and two old people (Rosina’s guardian, Dr. Bartolo, who has an eye on her dowry, and the scheming Don Basilio) attempt to thwart their romance. And then there is a clever man (Figaro), who is not only an expert on hairdos, but also the number one address when it comes to affairs of the heart… Based on Beaumarchais’ eponymous stage play, Rossini’s comedy has lost none of its freshness since its première in 1816. It is impossible to resist its rhythmical force, spiralling crescendos, ridiculous ensembles or aria highlights such as Figaro’s tongue-twister “Largo al factotum”. In our revival, a young, lively ensemble will be at work: Anna Goryachova as the crafty, seductive Rosina, Levente Molnár as Figaro, the bustling hairdresser, and Edgardo Rocha as the wealthy Count Almaviva. The Italian conductor Enrique Mazzola will be presenting himself at the rostrum of the Philharmonia
