"We are mainly familiar with Cavalleria rusticana. However, Pietro Mascagni composed fifteen other operas, all equally inspired. It was time to present Il Piccolo Marat, set in Nantes.
The title of this work, created in 1921 in Rome, refers to the Marat Company, founded during the Terror to organize, from November 1793 to February 1794, the infamous drownings of aristocrats and religious figures in the Loire. Mascagni's fiery score takes us through this storm that sweeps soloists, choir and orchestra into an astonishing musical whirlwind."
