Description
"Easter Monday marks the first day after the resurrection of Jesus Christ for the Christian religion. Many musicians were inspired by this episode, particularly throughout the Baroque period. From this liturgical context was born the oratorio form, drawing heavily on lyrical emotional power. Handel composed more than thirty oratorios. While Messiah remains the "hit" in this field, we should not underestimate his other productions, including this Resurrection, which dates from 1708, the period when Handel left Germany to go to Rome to explore Italian musical art up close. It was the Bonelli family who commissioned this piece from him so that it could be performed in their palace in April 1708, thus overcoming the ban at the time on performing opera in private homes. In the manner of an opera, "Il caro Sassone" - as the Romans nicknamed it - here mixes stories soberly accompanied by the basso continuo and brilliant airs, charged with expressing all the mysteries of the Passion of Christ. Julien Chauvin has assembled a very fine cast for the occasion".
