Description
Concert.
"Offered during the end-of-year holidays, Martha, with its flavors of romance and humor, is a gem to discover!
Martha, or The Market of Richmond is part of the Germanic lyrical heritage with the great success it enjoyed in Europe but also across the Atlantic. It is one of the most performed plays in Germany until the 1960s, before falling into relative oblivion.
Let's set the scene for this funny story: in England, in the 18th century, two young noble girls go to the Richmond market where girls can "rent themselves out" as servants to local peasants. They disguise themselves, change their names, have fun and are soon caught in the trap of love...
In a joyful romanticism, the theme, today politically incorrect, unfolds with strong unison choruses, love duets and languorous arias.
Friedrich von Flotow lived for about twenty years in Paris, then the world's musical center, where he met, among others, Rossini, Meyerbeer and Donizetti, whose influence can be heard in Martha. Flotow's music is elegant, by turns dramatic and funny, with demanding vocal parts that require excellent singers. "The Last Rose of Summer," Martha's most famous melody, is based on a very famous Irish folk tune that has been honored with musical treatments by Beethoven, Gounod and Britten."
