"March 1941: a cargo ship leaves Marseille for Martinique with, on board, several artists and intellectuals fleeing Vichy France, including André Breton, Claude Lévi-Strauss and the Cuban artist Wifredo Lam. This authentic fact takes a turn wonderful when Charon, ferryman of the dead promoted to captain, bends space-time to his will and invites other famous figures into this ark of a new kind, allegory of all the forced expeditions of yesterday and today – including the representatives of anticolonialism Aimé Césaire, Franz Fanon or the Nardal sisters. At LUMA Arles, the brilliant South African visual artist William Kentridge takes the viewer on one of these artistic, political and spiritual adventures of which he alone has the secret: a chamber opera which is inspired by the avant-gardes of the time promoting the surreal and the irrational (masks, collages, projections) and calls on dancers, performers, choristers and instrumentalists in a wide range of musical styles, particularly African and Caribbean."
