The creation of Tristan und Isolde in 1865 was to revolutionise lyric art. Wagner broke away from all the rules of the genre, opening virtually infinite horizons. From the most simple, universal Mediaeval myth - a vassal in love with his King's wife - he formulated an unprecedented musical language, where voices and orchestra interweave in an immense elegy to passion and heartrending emotion.
