Description
Co-production with the Aix-en-Provence Festival where the production premiered in July 2023.
Written and composed by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill in 1928 as a scathing revue, intended to be performed by actresses, it enjoyed immense success from its creation. In the heart of London's underworld, where the characters all belong, more or less, to the world of crime, the bandit Macheath struggles to hide his romantic conquests from the many women he courts. In this opera parody where the songs are the driving force of the action, the characters ape the audience's bourgeois lifestyle to better denounce the period of moral confusion they are going through, and which is reminiscent of ours. .
This new production is also that of the first times. First collaboration between the Comédie-Française and the Aix-en-Provence Festival, where the show will be created on July 4 before being presented at the Salle Richelieu. Thomas Ostermeier's first production for the opera with this legendary musical piece which allows him to reunite with the Troupe for a third creation. New French translation – the last dating back half a century – commissioned for the occasion from Alexandre Pateau. Finally, a new song, initially planned for the French version but never created, will be discovered under the baton of Maxime Pascal who here revives the original tradition of the work of an orchestra composed of multi-instrumentalists. “To shape the aesthetic environment,” says Thomas Ostermeier, “we looked towards what was most interesting and most innovative from the years 1917-1918 on the Russian theater stages, with Meyerhold or Mayakovsky, constructivism. , the creations of Lissitzky”, an aesthetic of collage resonating with this polymorphous work.
