Description

World Premiere,
commissioned by the Perelada Festival,
co-production of the Perelada Festival, the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Teatro de la Maestranza, with the participation of the Teatro Real and the Teatros del Canal.

"At the beginning of the 20th century, a countess attends a performance of "Don Giovanni" accompanied by two close friends. She observes the scene, the characters, but is unable to connect with the play. However, a creative impulse comes to her: to write his own Don Juan. Let us accompany Carmen Díaz de Mendoza Aguado, the Countess of San Luis, to her office. She begins to write but it is not only her voice that she listens to but that of her uncertainties, that of society or even that of a ghost that holds her. She is alone, although she has her friend Miguel with her, who also does not understand why she must continue with this strange project. Finally comes the premiere and the work is a fiasco. Here we are in 2024 and a new creator is trying to complete an opera, to complete what happened with that premiere of "Don Juan no existe" by Carmen Díaz de Mendoza Aguado. She got her hands on some newspaper clippings concerning the first but as for the Countess there is practically nothing left, not even the text; she has to invent it in order to be able to talk about her. Again the antagonistic voice is heard, but this time it is different, she does not make the author doubt. The conversation begins; she asks: why search so much for this Countess? But the author is convinced by her task and she continues to search. Thus was born this opera by Helena Cánovas Parés, a commission of the Peralada Festival, in co-production with the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Teatro de la Maestranza, with the participation of the Teatro Real and the Teatros del Canal for having emerged as the winner of the second edition of the Carmen Mateu Young Artist European Award. An opera that wants to pay tribute to all the women who have been eliminated from history for the simple fact of being born women."
