It is always a shock to relive the Mycenaean legend of Elektra, shouted by the orchestra of Strauss, that has replaced with expressionistic fury the ancient Chorus of Greek Tragedies. In the libretto by Hofmannsthal, the tale of Sophocles is reinterpreted in a dark Freudian nightmare atmosphere: a meeting of the subconscious with Greco-Germanic atrocities. The powerful single act recounts the hatred of the protagonist for her mother, Klytämnestra, who is responsible for the murder of her husband Agamemnon. Elektra dies while dancing with joy upon her brother Orest killing their mother in her sleep. The satanic story of revenge of this psychoanalytical Hellas will be aroused by the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen who will have a stellar cast at his disposal. The guilty mother will be played by Waltraud Meier, the degenerate daughter by Evelyn Herlitzius and the matricidal brother by René Pape. It will be directed by Patrice Chéreau, who has put on some of the most memorable productions at La Scala. If he has chosen such a raw opera, with scenes by Richard Peduzzi, he must have something strong in mind.
