Description

"The story of the composition of Handel's Jephtha is a dramatic subject in itself. It is the last oratorio written by the aging and blind musician, but perhaps also the most moving. The work bears the scars of the illness that struck him during his writing work but which did not succeed in triumphing over his faith. "All that is, is well," says the chorus. Handel's conviction and energy seem unshakeable. The original score bears in its flesh the musician's pain: "Arrived here, Wednesday, February 13. Prevented from continuing because of my left eye." A little further on, dated February 23, we can read "Feeling a little better. Returned to work." And what is read is heard in the music. Let's bet that the immense Joyce DiDonato will in turn give flesh to this journey of pain bathed in all the vocal sumptuousness of which the musician demonstrated throughout its production."
