Description

New production,
Coproduction Opéra Nice Côte d’Azur, Théâtre de Gelsenkirchen.

"Michel, a traveling salesman, spends one day in a small coastal town in the South of France. There he discovers a young woman, whose memory will haunt him forever. Until the moment he decides to return to this small town, in search of the beautiful stranger.

Inspired by a drama by the surrealist poet Georges Neveux, Martinů explores with Juliette ou la Clé des songes the questions of love and memory, in a world where memories are bought from a merchant! With poignant poetry, the Czechoslovakian composer probes the meanders of the human psyche, questioning the boundaries between reality and dreams, playing on different levels of consciousness to question our relationship to the world and to others. A rare opera, with a sensitivity on the surface of the skin, a tenderness and a humanity far from the usual surrealist sketches.

To embody Michel and Juliette, two artists among the most promising of the young generation, Ilona Revolskaya and Valentin Thill, directed by one of the best specialists of the 20th century repertoire, Anthony Hermus. The directors are two artists who are now well-known to our house: Jean-Philippe Clarac and Olivier Delœuil."
