Inspired by a short story by Pushkin, where the Russian playwright described how a man gradually becomes obsessed with gambling at the card table, The Queen of Spades was rapidly acknowledged as one of Tchaikovsky's great works on a par with Eugene Onegin, with which it shares a unique art of dramatic suspense and progression. The Russian composer knew how to evoke the wounds and fragilities of the soul, together with its impenetrable depths.
