Listened to attentively, it is a droll opera; full of cheer and humour, but from the heart. In no other comic opera do we find the pathos of pieces such as “Una furtiva lagrima”. It appears a simple tale of good sense, but it is based on a libretto by Felice Romani of great intellectual finesse. Rationality laughs at folk superstitions. Only a fool would believe in love potions. In fact, the only person who does believe in them is Nemorino. But in the end, the honesty of sentiment gets the better of imposture. Adina recognizes Nemorino’s true constancy and awards him with her favour. Or perhaps she just becomes aware of his sudden wealth? The doubt stands. A famous and experienced show, with scenery and costumes designed with the gentle touch of painter and scenographer Tullio Pericoli. This time, the direction is entrusted to the German Grischa Asagaroff, who must disentangle the web of love and laughter. Worthy of note the return of Nello Santi, one of the most expert and reliable opera conductors.
