"The island of Ceylon and its renowned fishermen, a beautiful and chaste Brahmin priestess, two men who have fallen in love with her but are bound by an oath of unbreakable friendship: these are the ingredients of this elegiac and enchanting opera by the young Bizet, a pure representative of the exotic movement, reeling off poignant scenes and ineffable arias like jewels on a necklace – including Nadir's famous romance "Je crois entend encore". It is with the entry of a new title into his repertoire and by drawing on artists who are particularly dear to him that the Festival celebrates the Bizet anniversary: ​​Pene Pati continues his ascent to the firmament of French song; the French soprano Elsa Benoit performs for the very first time at the Festival – both are making their role debuts; and this year again, Florian Sempey demonstrates his peerless vocal authority as Zurga. An incomparable servant of this repertoire but for the first time in this work, Marc Minkowski makes an eagerly awaited return to Aix at the head of the Musiciens du Louvre and the Choir of the Opéra Grand Avignon."
