General Information

Description

Concert.

"Composed for Louis XIV by Jean-Baptiste Lully and his faithful librettist Philippe Quinault, inspired by Ovid, Persée has all the makings of a monumental opera. Packed with dances, combat scenes, monsters and special effects, this spectacular work tells the extraordinary story of Perseus, son of Zeus and conqueror of the snake-haired monster, the gorgon Medusa. Characteristic of Lully's opera, it is composed of an overture, a prologue (in praise of Louis XIV) and five acts. The work is all flamboyance, mixing heroic glory and romantic torments with balance and finesse. More than half a century after its premiere, Persée was chosen by Louis XV to inaugurate the brand new Opera of the Château de Versailles, on the occasion of the marriage of Marie-Antoinette and the dauphin. A sleeping beauty on stage ever since, it is still rare to hear it, so people rush to it."
