Description

Opera created here on March 6, 2000, then under the direction of Michael Schønwandt and in the direction of Phyllida Lloyd. The work is based on the novel of the same name by Canadian author Margaret Atwood (which also resulted in a television adaptation in the form of a hit series).

As a result of the Covid pandemic and the local government's announcements on 6 April 2020, the Royal Danish Theatre must cancel all performances and activities for the public until 31 July 2020 (which is the rest of the 2019/20 season). This also includes Kongelig Sommerballet and Opera i det fri throughout the country, including its planned performances in August 2020. However, the production is revived in October and December 2022.
