"A thousand-year-old cave painting in China depicting a drowning man saved by a marvelous doe whose existence he must not reveal; a cramped kitchen in modern-day India where an old woman welcomes those battered by life, whom she heals through song; the garden of a former prostitute, in which a monk teaches the secrets of "Awakening"—that supreme state of knowledge and compassion. This is the plot of The Nine Jeweled Deer, a world premiere opera born from the encounter between composer Sivan Eldar and singer-improviser Ganavya Doraiswamy, heirs to seemingly distant musical traditions—classical and electronic music for the former, traditional South Indian and jazz for the latter—but united by a shared commitment to openness to one another, to care, and to listening. Three exceptional artists are joining the adventure, in partnership with the LUMA Foundation: the director Peter Sellars, the visual artist Julie Mehretu and the writer Lauren Groff."
