Jean-Pierre Ponnelle avait imaginé cette mise en scène en 1968 à Florence. Cette dernière a déjà été reprise, notamment à Paris en 2011-2012, puis en 2013 ou encore en juin 2017, en 2018 et en 2020 à la Bayerische Staatsoper. Un film a également été tourné en 1981.
